While it is often not that big of a detriment to start focusing on your vacation a bit early, there will certainly be instances when you will find your performance at work slipping due to this advance excitement about your vacation, and when you will realize that “looking forward to your vacation” is negatively affecting other areas of your life as well.

How To Uncork A Bottle Of Wine

You do not want to serve your wine at room temperature, which is the first thing you need to realize, as wine should be served chilled; the night before you plan to serve it, put your wine in the refrigerator, as this will ensure that your wine will be at the temperature where you want it before it is time to bring it out.

You will need to have a good corkscrew in order to open a bottle of wine – and the good news is that a corkscrew is both inexpensive and easy to find; pierce the top of the cork with the point of the corkscrew, and then twist the corkscrew so that it “screws into” the cork. Once you have done this, you can flip down the “claw” on the corkscrew so that it is grabbing onto the lip of the wine bottle, and you will be able to pull upward on the cork until it comes free from the bottle itself.

Be careful when you are pulling the cork up, making sure that you do not pull too quickly, as this may cause the cork to break, or it may cause pieces of the cork to fall down into the wine; instead, you will want to pull up on the cork with a slow, steady, back and forth motion, and this will free the cork from the bottle with no problems at all – at which point you will be ready to serve the wine to yourself and your guests, and all of you will be ready to enjoy!

Cooking Fresh Artichokes

Artichokes are a mystery to many American dinner tables. They really should not be as they are very nutritious and can be a lot of fun to eat. Artichokes are high in fiber, vitamin C, foilc acid, and biotin. They are also a good source of vitamin A, and potassium. There isn’t much to cooking artichokes.  Here is a basic example of how to do it.

Believe it or not the artichoke is from the thistle family, and because of this artichokes do have thorns. These are located at the tips of the leaves, so the first thing you want to do is cut off these thorns with a kitchen scissors. You then can cut off the top fourth to third of the small leaves.  There is not much in these leaves to eat so you may as well remove them.

Grab a large pot and begin to boil some water in it.  You can salt the water and add a large slice of lemon to it if you wish. Place the chokes in boiling water. Somewhere between a half hour and fifty minutes you can check your artichokes to see if a leaf easily pulls off.  If the leaf does come off easily, your choke is done. Once you can easily remove a leaf you can carefully remove the artichoke and allow to drain.

I personally like to melt some butter and add some lemon juice, salt, and pepper and use this for a dipping sauce. Start by pulling off a leaf.  You will be eating the fleshy part at the very base of the leaf by scraping it on your teeth. Dip the flehsy end in the butter dip and place into your mouth.  Lighly close your teeth about half way up the leaf and pull the leaf out. 

After all of the leaves have been scraped, you will be left with a fuzzy “choke” in the middle. You will need to take a spoon and scrape all of the fuzz off. The fuzz is not good to eat. Under this fuzz is the heart of the artichoke. The heart is good to eat. The stem may or may not be to your liking. I don’t like the texture of flavor of the artichoke stems.
